What we did the last two weeks

We were invited to a bike riding birthday party. Moira had a great time, Davis was sad because he wanted a different color party favor and refused to bike at all until we were leaving when he burst into tears because he wanted to ride. Being 2.5 is hard.

Cone of whipped cream
He did think the dessert offered was delicious. Rice Whip with sprinkles in a gluten free cone. All the kids had multiple servings.

Little flowers
We went to Remlinger farms with friends, and Moira and Davis tried to stick their heads in all the cutouts. They also wanted to ride all the rides, although Moira refused to go on the roller coaster, Davis insisted and had a great time.

Davis rides a pony
Davis also finally found a pony small enough that he was willing to try and ride it. I think it helped that there were bigger horses for older kids, so he had something to compare it to.

A shrimp!
We went to my favorite local beach, Jetty Island, but Moira was so worn out from the last couple of weeks that she couldn't have fun and asked to go home early. We did get to see a little shrimp one of our friends had found in a tide pool before we left.

Making sand creatures
Davis had an absolutely fantastic time, and I was sad that I had to take him away since it was the first thing he'd enjoyed all week. But he didn't seem to mind leaving either.

All the band aids
Moira bandaged up her many beach wounds when we got home, and seemed to feel better right away.

Let's bike!
I had a lot of canning to do this week, so my friend came over after we got home from the beach so we could work together. While the jars were sterilizing, we took the kids out for a little bike ride.

Reading a catalogue
Davis has started joining Moira when she's circling things she wants in catalogs. They are things that are for each of them, and then things to share, and they use a different color for each category.

Playing princess dominoes
Moira has moved from just playing with her dominoes to actually playing the game.

We forgot swimsuits
We went to another birthday party, but forgot swimsuits, so there was a lot of nudity.

Duplo slide
Davis says he built this all on his own, but I suspect he had a little help from Moira, because when it started falling apart, he couldn't put it together again.

Davis sergeing
I helped the kids make pillowcases, and they both got to use the serger for the first time. Davis has been paying attention while I taught Moira to sew, because he knew exactly where to put his hands.

Making patterns
I went to find Moira to ask her if she wanted to do something fun, but she asked me to wait because she was still busy with the pattern tiles. This sort of focus has been happening more and more often lately.

Davis loves shoes, especially these clippy cloppy shoes of Moira's.

Playing Castle Panic with friends
I was having a rough day, so my friend Jennifer brought all three of her kids, and her canning for an hour drive both ways to keep me company. We played Castle Panic with the kids, and I suspect I know what I should get her eldest for his birthday this year, because he really enjoyed it.

Tedious shoe buckling
Davis insists on pulling the straps on his shoes all the way out every time he puts them on. I guess rebuckling is skill he wants to learn right now.

Table setting
The babysitter came back after three weeks of vacation and the kids were ecstatic. Moira had a big list of things she wanted to do with Kelly including a fancy tea party.

Baking soda and vinegar
Davis really wanted to play with this little volcano we got from Little Passports, but we lost the bottom, so he had to compromise.

Captain Hook, playing the piano
Davis was pretending to be Captain Hook, and so this maraca was his hook. I'm glad he settled on piano playing as a Hook approved activity instead of banging on the walls.

My sister has being doing some journal prompts lately, and Moira decided that she wanted to do some too. They spent at least a half an hour on it, and Moira did lots of writing.

We put new batteries in our gear board, and that kept three whole kids entertained for quite awhile (the baby is a loaner). Moira is in love with babies right now, she kept following him around trying to get his attention.

New fish tank
We gave up on getting the smaller fish tank balanced so that it wasn't just constantly full of algae, so Walker went and bought a new one. It has plants and everything.

Week 34

Someone had fun
Davis had a lot of fun at the beach this week. Can you tell?

On a train!
I remembered to take a selfie while doing something fun with the kids!

Google Family Picnic

We went to the company picnic this year, and there was more then twice as much to do as last year, even though it was the same venue. Of course, there were also much longer lines. I suspect the local offices have grown a lot more then I thought in the last year, but Walker was cagey about that, so I guess I'm not allowed to know.

Firefighter Davis
Davis got to be in a firetruck. When the firefighter asked if was a firefighter too, Davis said yes.

There were a bunch of inflatables, including a water slide they didn't get to go on because I left the bathing suits at home.

Get us more!
This was their favorite, There were holes in the side for adults to push the "boulders" into the kids.

Sand art
They got to make these sand art trucks.

Spin art frisbees
And spin art frisbees.

Pink kitty
Moira got her face painted, and opted for a pink kitty instead of the Elsa tiara 90% of the girls there were choosing.

The longest line, after the one for food, was for the paddle boats, but the kids were mostly okay with the wait.

Hula hooping
They played with the hula hoops while we waited our turn for balloons.

Kitty wand
This line moved much faster this year, because they had a different company doing it, and they only did really simple things. And they didn't want to give balloons to anyone under three, so I lied about how old Davis was. I'm pretty sure the clown knew I was lying, but whatever.

Airbrush tattoo
Moira also got one of the airbrush tattoos before we headed out. Because you can never have too many tattoos.

That's the pile of loot she got at the picnic. It was a little excessive. She's looking at the silly photos we took at the photo booth. I was wearing a green shirt, so when they added the cloudy background, my shirt turned cloudy too.

And Davis, of course, fell asleep. It was a good day.

What we did last week (plus a little of the week before)

Moira and the turtle
We got to go to a release of Western Pond Turtles with the Woodland Park Zoo. Moira started out very nervous, which is what happens, but we had a conversation about how she always asks to do these things and then she lets her fear stop her from participating, and so she should either try touching a turtle or we should stop signing up for these. She opted to touch the turtle, and then decided that it was okay to hold them and let them go. So that was good.

Costume list
We got the Chasing Fireflies catalog and Moira circled half the costumes, then we made a list of all the ideas for her Halloween costume this year so we can winnow the list down. It's two pages long.

Assembling chairs
We got new chairs for our dining room, and the kids were very interested in helping me put them together. Moira was most interested in the little tools that came with them.

New hairdo
Moira really wants to grow her hair out, including her bangs. She's been having trouble with her bangs in her face, and also with tangles in her hair in the morning, so I have been encouraging her to let me use the barrettes and ponytail holders to help her. It only lasted a few days before she went back to long flowing free hair.

Making a smoothie
She checked out a Princess Cookbook from the library and wanted to make lots of things from it. I let her plan a dinner, and she did a big chunk of the actual work this time. Part of that was that Davis was trying to help so I was too busy to take over. But she also just was very capable this time.

Lunch at google
The kids were cranky that Walker was back at work, so we went to have lunch with him at Google. They always insist on sitting with him there.

Davis insisted we play Candyland some more. Lots more.

Coloring along
One time when we were playing, Moira decided to color a picture based on what cards we drew. I didn't catch all the details of her system.

Little builder
The kids helped me clean up their bedroom and play room a little, and I put Davis' tool bench back together. He was very happy because "I a builder!"

Perler beads
The neighbor girls came over for a playdate, and they all made perler bead things.

We found this volunteer sunflower, along with a little friend. Moira correctly figured out why the ladybug was hanging out on this sunflower for so long.

Moira's ladybug
Moira was annoyed that the theme of the parent/child nature class for this week was "Bugs and Slugs" until I pointed out that there were lots of bugs she likes. She really got into it.

Davis was a little slower to warm up to it, but he did enjoy finding bugs, and running around with Moira, along with touching this mushroom.

Moira also made the monkey bread from the princess cookbook, and got really into mixing the flour and butter together. She usually wants to wash her hands five seconds after she touches dough, but this time I had to make her stop.

Davis drew all over our roommate's white couch with a red pen. While the seat was getting washed, Walker suggested that he vacuum the crumbs out. Then he vacuumed everything else.

Mosh pit
We took the kids to their first non Folklife music festival, and Moira decided to try dancing with her friend. Then she didn't want to stop.

Building robots
When we got home the kids decided to make robots with the Ogobild. Moira made a spinning one.
